Your Garden Book

a jewel of a book of your garden
photographed and produced by
Margaretta K. Mitchell

There is a moment, a particular season when your garden demands that you remember just how beautiful it is. In that instant you see how much the knowledge, work, planning and love of it shows. You might imagine your own personal garden book. You can have it just as you envision it through the capable efforts of well-known author, photographer and designer, Margaretta Mitchell, who will produce a one-of-a-kind, hand-bound book, album or box of prints just for you.

She can show you samples such as her small square book, English Gardens, which has pigment prints with interleaving papers. The images within are made from transparencies, scanned and printed in color with archival pigment inks. Or perhaps you want a more traditional leather album, or a larger box to open up to individually mounted black and white gelatin silver prints. The choice is yours.

Photography: Margaretta will begin her photography session in the garden with an initial walk through to establish the points of view with you and then return for at least one early morning and one late afternoon photography session that includes vistas and details. She will use several different formats to create the imagery.

Book Production: For pigment printing, we will scan the transparencies (or prepare the digital files) and then print them on 100% rag fine art paper. Your own personal statement (an editor is ready to serve your needs), or selection of text will be hand-written in elegant calligraphy. The pages will be bound into a linen covered book with slipcase to match.  For an album, the prints and text sheets will be mounted into a custom-made leather bound album. For a hand-made box the prints will be mounted to fit a clam-shell style box, made and covered in fabric or linen. The whole will be designed and produced to your specifications.

Margaretta is very enthusiastic about these garden book projects and hopes this introduction gives you some idea of what it takes to do the photography design and production.  For more information, and a price quote for your project, call Margaretta at 510.655.4920.  See more images of gardens or email at
