A Little Valentine Vignette
With Valentine’s Day recently passing us, I want to share a story with you.
Here in the Bay Area we have a tradition, started three years ago by the Special Collections people at the San Francisco Public Library, which is a most heartfelt gift for Valentine’s Day.
Led by Lisa Dunseth, a group of printing devotees gathers and prepares the Albion Press for the printing of a VALENTINE BROADSIDE by the first 100 persons who show up for the excitement, which occurred this year on Saturday afternoon, February 1st.
The antique Albion Press is dear to my heart, having been a part of our family from 1959 until my husband, Frederick Mitchell, died eighteen years ago this month. This Albion Press was the first thing that we purchased together in London, while on our honeymoon. He would have celebrated his 81st birthday on February 2nd. My whole family is honored that this hand press is part of such a charming tradition, that it is used by people who love fine press printing and that everyone is having fun rediscovering the pleasures of this craft! A toast to the 50 years of Special Collections and to the three years of this adventure with ink and paper.
