THE FACE OF POETRY
Greetings from The Face of Poetry tour at Smith College in Northampton, MA.
I just want to bring you all up to date on the tour of the exhibition on The Face of Poetry, which has traveled east from USC to Smith College where it is housed on the walls in the Neilson Library. The lovely exhibition space has all the portraits, beautifully lit, peering out from their places around the walls.
The exhibition is the centerpiece of the celebration of the tenth anniversary of the Smith Poetry Center and will be there all semester. The book is for sale to students at half price all the school year in order to encourage students to have it. Very classy. I would expect nothing less from my own Alma Mater!
Martin Antonetti, Curator of the Rare Book Room , Ellen Watson, Director of the Poetry Center and Mary Irwin, Chair of the Friends of the Smith College Library all joined forces to make the show and the celebratory events happen.
Robert Hass gave a brilliant and extremely generous reading to a full theater on Tuesday evening October 2nd. There was an afternoon reception in the exhibit followed by an elegant dinner at the president’s house hosted by Carol Christ (formerly at UC Berkeley) and her husband, Paul. It was amusing to have three of us there from Berkeley to honor the anniversary at Smith.
On Wednesday I gave a talk in the browsing room in the library and was pleased with the audience and the Q & A. It was a delightful experience for me to be there as visiting artist and experience the high intellectual atmosphere that I remember so well from my time as a student.
Next spring the show travels to Open Book in Minneapolis, MN.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions (and connections) for places to send the exhibition in 2009.
NUDE AND NATURE IN HAWAII
In June of 2007 I led a workshop, Nude and Nature, for Hawaii Photo Retreat, an exciting new venture founded by Mary and Ken Goodrich. This was their inaugural workshop and was an extraordinary experience for us all. The participating photographers were all highly skilled and some were teachers of photography themselves!
For four days we hiked into sites that proved to us that the Big Island of Hawaii is justifiably known for its natural beauty and volcanic energy. We found it a place of extravagant contrasts, so wonderful for developing concepts of figure studies as a part of Nature. We also had a day of portraiture in the central building of a “campus” of cottages set in a grove of tree ferns. The studio was flooded with natural light, perfect for photography, although it was hard to bring ourselves inside!
Several students told me that they produced their best work ever during that week. I am so thrilled with my own images that I will be bringing out a project in 2008. Watch my website for news of its final form.
Check out www.hawaiiphotoretreat.com for current workshops.
